Hey gang, it’s been a while since writing a blog. A lot has been going on. I spent much of the year building my private investigation business and working as a full time investigator again. So while I am on the computer and in the field quite a bit over the summer, much of it was spent in professional efforts rather than a cryptozoological one.

Now that thinks are back to a dull roar, I can now spend some time enjoying my pastime, the more crypto and paranormal things.

First my usual winter warning. Lots of times I will get pictures from folks featuring tracks in the snow. Many do not consider that melt can occur even in freezing conditions as sunlight hits a track.

20181203_082231

Here’s a picture from my front yard showing what a boot print looks like after a few days of some sunlight on it. The print itself expanded exponentially and looks more like a bare foot than a booted or shoed one. So..caveat emptor.

The latest picture making the rounds

So over the fall during the Whitehall Sasquatch Festival I met a lot of folks.  The first was a woman who had a very interesting video capture and is going to be the focus of an investigation over the spring when foliage comes back, and the snow cover get’s lost! Sorry have to hold that one back until I can properly investigate it.

I also had a gentleman approach me and state he had an interesting trail camera shot, and showed it to me and I took a picture of the picture.

20180929_105736

In the beginning of December it has started to make the rounds on YouTube and several websites and Facebook posts.  The video below from the Squatch Watchers Channel has an interview with Joe Hunt, the submitter of the picture.

Vidcap1

The picture was taken on private land in June. Now the picture does have a year stamp of 2015 and whether that was an oversight, we are still not quite sure if the camera had the wrong year on it or whether or not it was taken in June of 2018. During the interview, which appeared to be sincere and authentic of Mr. Hunt, he did state the picture was taken in June on private land adjacent to the South Mountains Game Land in North Carolina.

map

What would I like to see, is some comparison pictures of humans, using the same camera with the same tree.

This is what needs yet to be done and should be done:

  • Comparison pic with the camera, posted on the same tree, at thee exact same height and angle the camera was originally placed with some known variables as a test subject to properly ascertain height, width and distance from the camera.
  • Clarification on the exact date, 2015 or 2018?
  • Other captures from the camera the time it was up during the photo in question.

Other than some testimony from an experienced hunter, we lack the investigation into the photo and we get rather a subject analysis, albeit a good one. A proper investigation will answer the questions to lend credence to the photo that this is a Sasquatch, or debunk it, but it needs to be done.

Sharpened Cropped

A little quick work of my own… sharpened and cropped.

The good news at least is that there is a story behind it, not just some random photo and it certainly requires more investigation before any labels be put on it.

My initial thoughts are, look at the leaves in the background and sticks on the ground. If we are looking at a 5, 6 or 7 foot creature, those leaves and sticks look awfully big. And we don’t see trees in the background, we see plant life. A recreation photo would do much to answer those questions.

Sad News

I’d like to share a couple of passings in the Bigfoot Community.

First is Leroy Blevins. Mr. Blevins wrote a book about the Patterson-Gimlin film and recreated a suit to pony tail the work of Greg Long. Although I did not agree with Mr. Blevins sentiments on the PG Film, and he was aware of that, he was a gentleman.

Leroy Blevins

While at ScareFest in 2017, he came up to my table and introduced himself and presented a copy of his book to me. Although I did not agree with it’s final premise the book did contain some great historical items not easily found.

20181209_11294920181209_112956

Another and very sad passing was the passing of William Dranginis long time Virginia Bigfoot researcher and an expert on FLIR technology.

_dev_pubsys_images_1216235165_m_dc_cover_issue_29b_1

William personally was a humanitarian and dedicated family man, but perhaps best known for creating a FLIR surveillance vehicle he used in his Sasquatch missions.

William was a mentor to many a his grounded approach to Sasquatch research and he will be greatly missed.

As we have spoken before about recycled photos and others laying claim to them, we have yet another tangled web of folks trying to push their way to the top for attention using recycled hoax photos. But who was really the one pushing their way to the top is the question?

In 2012 a The Bigfoot Evidence Blog shared a picture of an alleged Sasquatch from Happy Camp California allegedly along the Klamath River.

The above picture had been debunked by a researcher named David Timmons clearly showing an obvious hoax submitted to the Bigfoot Evidence Blog which they clearly noted their suspicions in the last sentence of the article.

What caused a stir  a few days ago was a post caught by Hoaxer’s Exposed Group, Darren Lee,  by PacWest Bigfoot.

pw comment

As of this morning PacWest Bigfoot has removed the post post from site, but what made it more interesting was a group member of the page, claimed it was her photo!!! Both reference it as being taken in Washington State, but as we see from the original claim it was allegedly taken in California.

pw convo

c post

I attempted to inquire as to how the original poster got the photo, but it seems she decided not to answer, which I find highly suspect.

What is most condemning of the PacWest Bigfoot post, appears to be an embellishment of the alleged submitted story.

What we see is a hoaxed story behind the post of the hoaxed picture on the PacWest Bigfoot Facebook page.  from the person that originally posted, is up in the air.

It is noted, on the PacWest post it as did with the individual posting the hoaxed pic stated the location was Washington, and a male subject as the submitter. Matter of fact, the original source of the hoaxed photo dating back to 2012 stated the picture was from a female from Happy Camp, California. It is noted in the original source narrative, it went from a “her” to a “he.”

Also another interesting note is that in January, after numerous inquiries, PacWest Bigfoot, admits that what they do is for entertainment purposes. David the owner of PWB readily admits creating the back stories to Bigfoot encounters and does not want to be confused with what the really great researchers do out there.

So dear readers, be careful what you read or listen to out in cyberspace. Rest assured what we do is sometimes for entertainment, but it is always the truth, the good, the bad, and the ugly. We always strive, when possible, to source and verify. We will never knowingly put something out there untrue.

The effects of these types of programs on Bigfoot research will be the topic of a future blog.

We’ve seen this before folks. There has been at one time a fringe element within the Bigfoot community that believed a Sasquatch could cloak, shapeshift, hop aboard a UFO, jump through a portal, and have human qualities.

We usually saw this coming from people who for some reason or another believed in the biological Sasquatch only to get frustrated at their lack of advancement in achieving success that they began to subscribe to these theories.

In the past I have described at length what could cause, scientifically some of these anomalies that people see. Using infrasound (which as explained in the past is not a stretch as  the mammalian orders, some of the largest genera seem to have the ability to use infrasound)

Autism-and-infrasound-0e1

Infrasound can cause vibrations in the eyes, aural canals and effect the nervous system. These can cause hallucinations, feelings of being watched, hearing things, or generally a creeped out feeling. This affects people differently.

So in some of these cases where the Sasquatch told them something, or they may have hallucinated something such as a disappearance or “cloaking” it would seem extremely plausible that infrasound could be the root cause.

infrasound

The other factor at play is the brain’s response to seeing a creature “not yet in the system.” It is a trauma to all, in some wway, and how they deal with that from person to person varies widely. Some of these reactions not only explain some of the weird things people say a Sasquatch can do such as “cloaking”, but more to reality, why people with cameras don’t get a picture or video, or why they don’t necessarily fire a shot if they are hunting, aside from the folks that get a good look at the creature that say it looks human (as do gorillas, chimps etc.).

Also note that some armed folks still in their correct state of mind, use the proper rules of engagement in those scenarios as well such as being a non-threat or shooting because they don’t readily identify such as game.

I say all of this a bit gingerly because for the folks that legitimately experienced these types of reactions, it is real. Remember a person’s perspective (and in this case a legitimate witness) it is their reality. It may be incorrect as to the actual events, but that is how their brains perceived it. So to them it is concrete.

Enter Social Media

Not withstanding, there are some who claim this on a daily basis, weekly, whatever.  They will show pictures where pareidolia takes over and are ambiguous as to detail. I have seen some show pictures of nothing, claiming there was a Sasquatch in the picture cloaked.

“Pareidolia is a type of apophenia, which is a more generalized term for seeing patterns in random data. Some common examples are seeing a likeness of Jesus in the clouds or an image of a man on the surface of the moon.”

As we have seen some of these folks are out to gain a cult like following and try to legitimize their statements and usually they will find some “sheeple” to go along and agree with their every statement and agree to with what they are claiming.

Some of these folks will see the pareidolic effect and make statements to it authenticity.

None of these sites or pages offer any real evidence of the existence of a Sasquatch.

The Habituators

Another group that loves getting a cult like following, although dwindling in numbers, is the habituators or folks that believe they have them constantly living on their property and interact with them daily.

All one has to do is ask themselves, “They talk about it constantly, but where is the evidence?”

Exactly.

We have seen this over the decades, and not a single, interacting habituator can provide us with a decent photograph, DNA, audio?  See where this is going? Evidence, if any, presented again is extremely vague and ambiguous. Sorry, drawings and “gifts” left by Sasquatch does not constitute evidence if you don’t have physical evidence supporting that a Sasquatch did such.

Leaving a “gifting bowl” or anything for that matter on the ground and coming back the next day finding some of it missing with no evidence that a Sasquatch did such, and claiming such is just bad science. There are scores more of the animal kingdom in the forest than just a Sasquatch.

Again perhaps they want to feel special (which is a psychological thing), build a following or get on television.

The Mis-interpreters

The last group I will speak of is the folks that go out and do “research” and come back with nothing but stick “structures” in random areas. No prints, no reports, just…stick stuctures and “nests.” And while I don’t automatically discount these items, without corroborative evidence, it is just again bad science and investigation.

Again you will see the folks trying to make themselves famous, by posting every other day with videos of nothingness. No tracks, not audibles they claim to hear, just a video of them jawing about it.

No here’s the dilemma, because the information all these groups present, who is to say where their intent is without a smoking gun. (An they come few and far between).

So this realm falls into three categories, the wildly enthusiastic, the people who are claiming to know stuff they think they know, and the last group, the hoaxers.

Let’s face it, when it comes to Sasquatch, we actually do know a lot. They are primates, so their general behavior and attitude towards other primates, their curiosity, the mind’s need for stimuli, general living habits, caloric needs, their foot structure should be all pretty well known.

Can they gift? I believe they do, but not in the fashion many of these folks claim. Do they mess around with trees and create structures? I believe they can and do occasionally, just not in the numbers and frequency some people claim. Do they interact with people in a habituation? I believe they have, but the people that experience that are not looking for internet fame or speak of it all that much.

Well anyhow, let’s keep our eyes and ears doing what they do, and always, always, self evaluate your evidence and your experiences.

In bringing the public knowledge about the Sasquatch, it has been a stalwart mission to our readers to point out some of the bad things that go on that generally reflect to public safety and knowledge.

Many hoaxes go on, but I report those that have a continuous or financial impact among enthusiasts and followers of the Bigfoot / Sasquatch phenomena.

Tenet number 4 in our mission statement is that we “have a responsibility to educate.” When we educate to leave out or not to point out the bad, or the ugly that occasionally happens would be an error. Omitting that would be just as some of the things that the less credible or misinformation sites use to their advantage.

As I was collecting thoughts about this week’s blog, the story broke about some guy claiming to work with the government as a Cryptozoologist. First let’s start off by stating the misnomer that some get when the hear the term Cryptozoologist.

  1. It is a term used for someone who studies animals yet to be discovered.
  2. It is not a professional term. Much like the term “Philatelist.”

Now some lately have gotten angry over the use of the term Cryptozoologist, because it sounds like a profession rather than a term for the hobbyist.

A Cryptozoologist is someone simply who studies Cryptozoology, which according to the Oxford Dictionary is, “The search for and study of animals whose existence or survival is disputed or unsubstantiated.”

Similarly a Philatelist is someone who someone who studies Philately, which according to the Oxford Dictionary is, “The collection and study of postage stamps.”

Arkansas

Every once in a great while, making a fraudulent claim in the Bigfoot Community can have consequences. Especially when you impersonate a federal government employee.

Widely reported first coming to us in the Bigfoot Community and a great catch by Loren Coleman’s site, Cryptozoo News some cat by the name of Keith Barnes of Black Rock, Arkansas, was posing as working for the federal government as a cryptozoologist.

Keith Barnes

Given what I have shown above we know that is complete hogwash. But in his false claims prompted authorities to check his computer, they allegedly found child pornography.

Comments on an old article

Over a year ago, I posted about a paid Bigfoot expedition shut down by Federal authorities on Federal park land involving Bob Garrett.

                   Capturephoto

Bob & Brandon Garrett

For some reason almost 14 months later just last night I received threats from Garrett’s son, Brandon Garrett, (I will call him Junior) over the blog which exposed the elder Garrett’s gorilla audio and more to the point, the elder Garrett not returning funds as promised to at least three of the patrons, a sum of $1500. Not to mention the loss of costs they incurred to attend the shut down expeditions.

But that story was pretty much ancient history, but since Junior wants to go on a profanity, trollish and inaccurate tirade, let’s once again, bring it to the forefront.

So there we several questions he asked which I wish to address specifically and understand the questions are edited to remove both profanity and insults.

…do you even have enough decency to really do your home work?

                                                                       – Brandon Garrett

I will not address Junior directly but will direct my answers to the readers of this blog.

As a matter of fact yes I do. This did not start as an expose. More to the matter I was asked specifically by some friends of a couple of people that had lost money to investigate the possibility of getting their money back.

I spent at length speaking with the people who had lost their money to Garrett, received documentation and screen captures of their text exchanges with Garrett. I would consider that homework. And I always crosscheck my material as well.

I even attempted to speak with Garrett himself to resolve the situation. What I found was the elder Garrett refusing and making excuses NOT to give their money back. The story switched from one person involved in the venture when he spoke to the family to another when he spoke to me. He was 100% not at fault, yet the PayPal payment was made out to none other than “Robert Garrett.”

The buck stops there legally. The rest is minutia. Wherever the money went, if its there or not, what ever you claim; Garrett received money, admittedly and evidentiary, for a service he did not provide.

In February of 2016 she had paid for an expedition with the Texas Big Thicket Watch Guide Service, payable to one Robert Garrett, in the amount of $1000.00. Only to be told later that the expedition had been cancelled because they had been shut down by the federal government. When she spoke with Garrett she had asked about getting her money back, but Garrett said he was broke because he had to pay huge fines. If he gave her some time he would pay her back. He eventually stopped answering her calls. –Squatchdetective’s Blog 3/28/2017

Garrett was perhaps, in my opinion, the rudest and ill tempered person I have ever spoke with, simply trying to resolve the situation. Then as I peeled the onion back, another person who never got their money back came forward, and actually another and then the audio of a gorilla passed around, and confirmed by multiple sources, Garrett claiming it was a Sasquatch.

When you have witnesses that talk at length to you and give you everything you ask, and then ask for the other side of the story, and get a profanity laced tirade, with nothing to back up the story, who do you think is the truthful one here?

I think its really funny that you have comments blocked on this.

                                                          – Brandon Garrett

I think its really funny that Junior was mistaken. Actually I don’t have them blocked at all. Matter of fact there were numerous comments made, including a slightly dissenting opinion which a discussion was engaged. For some reasons, the comments were closed. I don’t specifically remember doing it, but it’s really moot anyhow, because it was OVER a year ago. Why all of a sudden now? Can’t help it if you are a “Johnny come lately.”

Any way comments are moderated to keep out profanity laced, trollish and threatening comments and done to promote civil conversation. Had the younger Garrett posted a comment in the section which resembled intelligent, questions and conversation, it would have been approved. In the manner he posed them on an instant message, umm no.

I will also make a quick note that  Junior was not responsible for any of the funds lost to people. I get it. He’s trying to defend his Dad, but there is a right was and a wrong way. The elder Garrett could have avoided everything just by returning the funds which the first family was even willing to get it back a little bit at a time.

But it just goes to prove, Junior’s questions are laced with inaccuracies, and was meant to get a rise out of me, as did the prank phone calls after the initial Garrett expose which I have never before this mentioned.

In truth, I am laughing. (Not with them either!)

Anyway, it’s all there in the original blog “Expedition None,” for one to catch up on if they so choose.

Well with Spring finally springing, I thought I would point out some common mistakes made in the field by some, identifying bear sign as Sasquatch sign, which with the advent of social media has become more common place.

Whereas twenty years ago, tracks were usually a Sasquatch print or a hoaxed print, today we see many a new researcher indicating bear tracks as Sasquatch tracks.

The idea sprung on me when perusing my usual sites, I came across a Ballyhoo post which showed a track. Now this is one of the rare instances where I do not think LNP is pulling our leg. She legitimately thinks that this track could belong to a Sasquatch.

footprint018)

Capture5

Bigfoot Ballyhoo Blog April 21st, 2018

However what LNP appears to be looking at is a bear overstep. Judging from the size, a black bear because the width of the track in comparison to LNP’s hand is too narrow to what we have observed in Sasquatch tracks.

The other tell tale sign is the shift to the left the print takes looking at it from top to bottom, as you will see an unusual indentation on the right side of the track outline going from top to bottom.

in this enhanced photo you will see what appears to be toes, in the upper middle portion of the print indicating overstep.

lnp2a

Needless to say this is not uncommon. The most common tell tale sign of an overstep is a deviation in the flow of the foot. The heel being at an awkward angle to the direction of the toes.

Once I had responded to a call from a man claiming to have numerous tracks near the Black River in the Adirondacks. I ha seen some of his casts and they looked peculiar. Sure enough we had gone to the location and discovered a set of fresh tracks in the sand on one of the banks to the river.

Clearly what was we saw was a bear overstep.

100_0522

Black River, Adirondacks: Bear overstep.

Again you can see the similarities in the LNP print and this one. Again the deviation from the upper middle section of the foot on the right.

Again this is a common mistake made by some folks not akin to tracking and animal sign. Again this is a learning curve and not meant as a put down. I too, took my bumps many years ago to learn the correct way to observe track evidence.

If you are not sure don’t be afraid and ask. Do not be in a rush to get those track photos posted. If you can cast them, please by all means do. Even if it is not a Sasquatch print, it’s good practice!

A lesson learned

In 2004 I had very little experience with bear sign and I had a reported sighting by two children stating they had observed a Sasquatch briefly. After interviewing them, their story was compelling, and upon examination of the area, just some 72 hours after their sighting, we found some scat I had never seen before. I did the right thing, and asked a veteran Bigfoot researcher and Forester Kathy Strain to look at a picture of the scat.

It was black bear scat. The children had heard stories previously of the Sasquatch, which may have predisposed them of a bear on its hind legs being a Sasquatch. I now believe what they had observed may have been a bear on its hind legs observing them. At least that’s what the physical evidence leans towards.

Point being, if you don’t know, be a responsible researcher and ask. And it changed the outcome of the investigation from likely Sasquatch, to likely bear.

And as a responsible researcher you should feel good about that, because our overall aim should be to the truth.

Some more Bear Sign

Many of the above bear sign is often shown to me as Sasquatch sign by some researchers. I suggest researchers go to the following site, if not to learn but rather to brush up.

https://www.wildernesscollege.com/american-black-bear-tracks.html

It should also hone the enthusiasts of Sasquatch and its research, to be more the wiser when perusing some sites showing “evidence” of a Sasquatch, which seems for some to come on a daily basis, another huge warning sign that their research lacks cross checking and self-analysis, which we should all be doing as responsible researchers.

Of course everyone be safe out there, and remember to Squatch responsibly and make sure when you head out to the forests to be prepared for whatever.
