I have to say what a wonderful and pleasant time in Pennsylvania this past weekend. Some good money was raised for some great charities, and I think all for the most part had a great time.

My presentation as I usually do on trips where research is the main focus, again was on what we really know about Sasquatches and the relationship to primate habitation and behaviors.

During Saturday, we had a great time meeting folks, talking about their experiences, signing a few posters and books, having some laughs and enjoying the camaraderie with the other participants, speakers and guests.

We had music by “Walt the Musician,” Walter Shrum and even event organizer Eric Altman got in on the action! Walt tried to get me, but I usually sing metal, not folk!!!

Both the evening before the speaking event and the evening after the speaking event were group research taking place at several locations in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

On Friday evening, it was BAPS Co-Founder Shawn Dennis and I along with a family of four.  Within a few minutes of our arrival we heard a tremendous howl, not quite sounding like a coyote.

After a quick scramble to get a recorder set up, of course it never repeated itself. However later that night I did get an excellent Coyote howl which wasn’t too far off from us.

So on to the exciting part. After call blasting some baby cries, I decided to do a thermal scan and perhaps take a picture or two, when I spied upon a very silent, rather large creature skulking about using the thermal camera.

Shawn could only look in the direction I was pointing him two, while the family stood behind me and watched the thermal as well.

We were quite excited about capturing the video, and there was quite the buzz about it Saturday, but when we got it home and was able to review it, I passed my decision over to some of my field team, and they all agreed that what we were looking at was most likely a bear, which stopped to look back at us by standing up after Shawn had throw a whoop or two at it.

I would like to thank all those involved for their kindness, and camaraderie. A special thanks to Eric Altman for having me along on this jaunt, and hopefully we’ll be doing it again next year!!!

Remember folks,  that’s what this field is about. The first priority is and should be to enjoy yourself. Yes there is hard work involved at times. Frustrations and disappointments. But all of the negatives are far outweighed by the positivity of this past weekend.

There is always controversy over Sasquatch evidence. From tree knocking, to vocalizations. From foot prints to tree breaks.

Perhaps some of the ingredients poised as the “most compelling,” probably turns out to be not compelling at all.

Lets talk about the more common place item we hear everyone posting pics of as evidence: Tree Bends.

Tree Bends, lets not bend the truth…

Over the years there has been much conjecture over tree bends caused by a Sasquatch, perhaps leaving a trail marker.

So lets look at some of the evidence.

Fact is there are no credible report of anyone ever seeing a Sasquatch bend a tree which stays that way. At least not to my knowledge. Side note: There is a person claiming to have a video of such, but has been outted as a hoaxer in regards to another video allegedly of a Sasquatch shaking a tree, which turned out to be his son.

But over the years there have been recorded tree bends which many Bigfoot Researchers, elect to believe as rock solid evidence of Sasquatch sign, despite the lack of corroborative evidence, other than perhaps a nearby series of Sasquatch encounters.

Even more interesting is the fact that, this event does not as frequently occur in many of the southern states.

Some folks have come up with suggestion that perhaps the Sasquatch, (don’t get me started about “Sasquatch-People”) learned this behavior from the Native Americans, who used to bend trees to eventually use them as trail markers.

No surprise, many think that the same of the Sasquatch of doing such. Not to my surprise, Chimpanzees and Bonobos (Pan troglodytes and  Pan paniscus respectively), our closest proven DNA matches, at times do mark their trails. So it is not out side the realm of such behavior being realistically related to the Sasquatch which is likely a closer DNA match to us than Chimps or Bonobos. 41

However the Native American trail markers look much different than your typical bends that are purported to be “Sasquatch sign.”

Pictured left, from http://www.ejlanham.com/IndianTrails.html,

on the right from: http://www.appalachianhistory.net/2013/12/indian-trail-trees.html

The trail markers also took time and were either tied down or weighted down with dirt or stone. In all instances I can recall, I have never heard of one report where it was weighted down as such, only at times in place with another tree upon it. The other factor is it took time for this process to occur.

So what we now look at is posing the question as they would both in science and the investigatory world, “Is there something in nature that would cause this to occur?”

The answer is yes. It’s called Ice Storms.

We need to look at “Trees and Ice Storms: The Development of Ice Storm-Resistant Urban Tree Populations, 2nd Edition,” written Richard J. Hauer, Jeffrey O. Dawson, and Les P.Werner in 2006.  It was a joint publication of the College of Natural Resources, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences and the Office of Continuing Education, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and published by the USDA.

First we look at the ice storm distribution map of the United States.

Ice Loading

As we can see this most likely will correspond to where we observe the most formation of tree bends, in the United States.  Of course another less frequent causal factor would be a downed tree to fall upon another tree in the manner in which would cause a bend, similar to the way Native Americans created their markers.

As we can see the types of trees which are subject to ice storm damage is listed in the diagram below.

Susceptable trees

However depending on severity, any tree can fall damage to an Ice Storm especially when winds speeds and gusts are excessive.

Most trees which bend from ice storms, do eventually recover, however depending on weakness in the trunks, the types of trees or where the tree was bent from the storm depends if the tree recovers to its formerly upright position.

Tree Bend Fig 8 USNFS

“Trees that bend under the load of accumulated ice will, in most cases, return to their pre-storm form, once the load is dissipated by melting. The mere fact that the tree did not break under the tremendous load suggests good structural integrity. “

Not Sasquatch…storm damage. Source: http://www.ext.colostate.edu/mg/Gardennotes/615.html

So there we have it. While its fun and exciting to think that tree bends are Sasquatch evidence, since ice storm damage cannot be ruled out in any of these instances, we cannot call these tree bends Sasquatch Evidence. The face that ice and snow for that matter combined with the wind element, can easily force a tree bend that perhaps even gets caught in another tree’s grasp. You definitely cannot rule out a human doing such as well. So unless you see the Squatch doing it… or surrounded by real Sasquatch tracks, its not evidence of anything unfortunately, and knowing what we know now, wild conjecture.

The tree bends’ tag team partner…tree breaks.

Of course tree breaks when tracking is something altogether different. Just finding tree breaks here and there can also have numerous causal factors such as ice storms, straight line winds, past tornadic activity etc.

A formerly bent tree which returns to it natural state can also fall victim to wind damage if internal cracking occurred during its bending prior to it returning to its natural state.

One thing that cannot be overlooked is the twist and bend, which has been reported to be frequent tracking signs of a Sasquatch for the last century.

This was found within 100 yards or less of a sighting by two preteens in 2003 in the vicinity of the Poultney River, New York side. The tree break was found in the direction of travel the creature the boys had seen.

What makes this break particularly interesting was that it was very close to the base of the trunk of the tree and was still a relative sapling having a lot of flexibility.

It was also of interest, that following in the same direction of travel there were appeared to be several partial indentations in leaves, but one specifically caught my attention. Luckily the leaves had preserved what was underneath them.

What we are looking at it a 13.5 inch long by 4.5 inch wide print, which was in a drained, but still mucky stream bottom.

The area historically had been rich with sighting reports including one in 1984, within a half mile from former Whitehall Police Office, the late Dan Gordon.

In 2006 myself and Bill Brann had investigated a sighting in Whitehall not very far from the historical sightings from the 70’s. 2 male witness saw a crouching Sasquatch shortly escorting 3 women to there vehicles after they had observed and 8 foot tall slender dark creature standing in the path. They screamed and ran back to where the males were which after getting the girls to the car, piqued their curiosity and started looking around to see the silent stalker, forcing them to retreat.

And inspection of where the creature had been crouching showed clear evidence of something large making its way through the brush to the road where it was lost. Not only was the leaf litter disturbed but there was evidence of movement taller than the average person arms would be.

The reasons which makes these breaks different from the tree bends, because lets remember that Ice Storms can cause breaks as well is two fold…

  1. The time of year was August for the 2003 encounter and  October for the 2006 encounter, its been months since winter ended, and those were fresh breaks.
  2. There was significant corroborative that these breaks MAY have been caused by a Sasquatch. In the 2006 case it was definitely caused by a large creature, be it known or unknown, walking to the roadway from the area of the encounter.

I often blog about things that are not Sasquatch such as hoaxes and as above misidentification of something natural, so it’s time to give back a little by showing some evidence that albeit seems mundane, is significant in validating and corroborating witness claims and that I am also not just a naysayer! Smile

Now dear readers, please don’t send me your pictures of breaks and bends. I am no expert. I am not an Arborist or Forestry agent or a meteorologist for that matter. But I speak to you as an experience researcher, who has made mistakes, taken missteps and learns from them. So learn from my mistakes.

What we should do is from a research / investigation standpoint:

  • Examine breaks, bends and the like when conducting investigations. (Meaning to a specific sighting report and location). Evaluating if it could be caused by wind or humans and is there any other corroborating evidence.

What we shouldn’t be doing is:

  • Going into the woods, willy-nilly, seeing a tree bend or break and calling it Sasquatch evidence. That is not scientifically or judicially honest.

Till Next Time,

This year seems a bit strange to me. For the first time in several years nothing major was going on. No Ketchum Project, No Sierra Shooting style news, the Sykes project is pretty much finished. Kind of sitting here twiddling my thumbs waiting for the “next big thing.”

Nonetheless the field team and I did stretch our legs a bit this year however, although nothing at all to report we had a wonderful time and getting out there with one of our Western NY folks Mike!

We have gotten a trickle of sightings reports coming in, and we are actively investigating this long term situation. We visited the property and are extremely excited at the prospect of obtaining some evidence.

Air time!!!

Radio2

We are now looking for guests for Squatchdetective Radio as we go to a whole new user friendly format.

We will no longer be a live format show, unfortunately because of schedules and finding a network host that could work for us. We just couldn’t make a live show work since our hiatus, so we’ve gone to this more polished format.

We may however once a month or so do a Google Hangout Free for all… Be kind of cool to see who just may show up!

Chris Bennett and I look forward to getting on with getting on!! If anyone is interested on being a guest, just drop me a line at radio@squatchdetective.com.

Legal Beagle… On to the BS D’jour!

On Thursday, May 14th, 2015 I received a “nasty-gram” in my email from Biscardi attorney and Biscardi business partner, Dennis Kazubowski.

It started with this wonderful quip…

“On March 25, 2008, you signed a Limited Association Agreement with Searching for Bigfoot Inc. which is attached to this letter. According to the document you signed, you agreed to hold in confidence any information gathered and further agreed not to disclose or reveal to any person or entity any information discovered under the agreement without the express prior written consent of the other parties.”

-Letter to Steve Kulls from Biscardi attorney, Dennis Kazubowski 5/14/15

Well I did sign a Limited Association Agreement for a single expedition on March 25, 2008 which would serve as my last outing as a contractor with Biscardi.

I find it a bit odd that an attorney would list this as the first salvo in an attempt to have me remove my Blog and Hall of Shame pages on Biscardi and his activities.

Because this is what the confidentiality agreement ACTUALLY said…

“The parties to this agreement agree to HOLD IN CONFIDENCE any information gathered from this expedition and further not to disclose or reveal any person or entity or any information disclosed under this agreement…”

He kind of left out the whole, from this expedition,” part. Since I revealed nothing about my last expedition with SFBI part on my Website or Blog… that’s out.

The confidentiality clause was part of a LIMITED agreement, clearly defined and stated within the agreement.

As far as the Hall of Shame Page, my book “Fifty Large,” both California, and New York have a ONE year statute of limitation on defamation claims. Nevada, the State in which Biscardi’s enterprises have filed there incorporations has a two year statute. Since the Hall of Shame Page came out in 2010 and Fifty Large in 2011, they’re out as fair game for any consideration for defamation.

As far as libel, defamation, what have I said that was not backed up by fact?

That Biscardi was involved in the 2008 hoax? The other two hoaxers implicated him.

It was his words and actions and statements (everyone remember “touched it, felt it, smelled it, on Fox News?”) put his responsibility in question.

Why didn’t he sue Dyer and Whitton? In “Not Typical Bigfoot Movie,” Biscardi stated he would sue anyone that would hoax him?

Another element in a defamation case is a falsity with malice or malicious intent.  The latest blog I had posted simple facts and what a cited source had told me.

Biscardi claiming to see a video of your truly riding ATV’s with two hoaxers, as proof I had set him up, when no such video exists because it never happened; THAT is defamation.

Reporting facts, citing sourced information and analysis of such facts is NOT defamation or libel.

Editorial license, is also not defamation nor libel when there is evidence and actions to bring up reasonable questioning. Even parody when it pertains to public figures, (which Biscardi is rest assuredly) as long it does not blur the lines of truth.

It is a fact that Biscardi set up a foreign company with a man under indictment who subsequently plead guilty, for a Ponzi Scheme, who was the former CFO for Searching for Bigfoot.

51e7251b2c9d3.image

David A. Nilsen (Source: Monterey County Weekly.com)

In fact the Monterey County Weekly called Nilsen, “Monterey’s Madoff.” In reference to convicted Ponzi schemer, Bernie Madoff.

Nilsen was indicted on September 8th, 2009 and the indictment was unsealed on September 10th, 2009 after he had surrendered to authorities in San Jose. Nilsen subsequently pled guilty in a plea bargain in Oct. 24th, 2011 and received a sentence of 97 months, in 2012. (Source: FBI.gov)

Very clear from the Nevada Department of State, this Foreign Corporation headed by Nilsen and Biscardi, was clearly after Nilsen’s indictment (June 8th, 2010). It’s status was revoked, however I am unclear of the reasoning behind the revocation, and it could have been something as simple as a missed filing.

Over 250 pages of police reports, public records and an SFBI Business Plan given to me from Rick Dyer which he had gotten from Biscardi.  (Source: Steve Kulls)

My personal opinion of Biscardi, is irrelevant, I do not go on this blog, my sites or other Podcasts and speak untruth without the evidence to back such up about anyone.

And I am not bullied so easily, especially when I lined my ducks up carefully. That’s my profession. My suggestion; “Don’t poke this bear.”

On the road again…

What a year it has been so far! I didn’t get the chance to get out to Salt Fork this year due to work commitments but did do the yearly Cabela’s Rare Strange and Unusual Sightings Weekend in March.

This year I am happy to add two more dates to the speaking line up:

August 21st – 23rd, 2015: Carnival of Parahorror

495 Paderewski Drive

Hey gang, a quick update from a weekend reconnoiter by One of our team leaders, Ted V.

Over the weekend Ted traveled to Research Area 1 when he met up with researchers from the Northeast Anomalous Research group when they noticed two trucks with yellow “Bigfoot Crossing” signs on them. (All my Team vehicles are unmarked.)

As they scouted the area they came across these obviously hoaxed tracks:

Obvious fake prints found in Research Area 1

(Credit: Ted V. / Squatchdetective Field Team)

In the 2013 we noticed a sharp downturn in activity, with the exception of a rock throwing incident which occurred in the fall of the same year. Last year we only took one trip there in the Spring and due to the inactivity, we considered the area “spent,” at least for that year.

Sad thing is, hoaxers of this amateurish sort do not understand that after doing this for 16 years this is kind of the thing that we spot from a distance and call it.

It’s either, “Wow a great print,” (a rarity especially given the substrate of New York State forests) or “see the arch, that’s a human foot,” or “that’s a stamper!” In this case… it’s a stamper.

So the prints the hoaxer made will not get posted as evidence, or as an exciting find, but rather a pathetic individual’s attempt at creating some noise and as a tool for teaching.

Any researchers out there, feel free to use these photos to show folks what phony tracks look like. How we notice the uniformity of the print, the squaring and finally the lack of any toe splay whatsoever.

They thought they would get us, but instead the joke is on them.

Research Area 1 had been my primary area since 2000, when an encounter was reported to me. It had yielded some great results over the years and some interesting encounters.

Since we know there is at least one hoaxer in this area, we have no choice but to move on and move on happily knowing we have many more productive areas to explore.

But you never know..we may just hide some cameras to get a snapshot of our hoaxer too!

A great thank you to Ted and N.E.A.R. for making this discovery.

Till Next Time…

While doing research for my book, "What Would Sasquatch Do?" it became very apparent that there was a link in many sightings to apple orchards.

In the 70’s in Whitehall, New York many of the sightings were centered on the north side of Route 4, and Abair Road. At the time there was a rather large apple orchard in the area on that north side.

Jabloně6708

In the mid 2000’s there was another flap of Sasquatch sightings this time on the South side of Route 4, but the apple orchard to the north, was long gone. However there is a large commercial apple orchard on the South side of Route 4 currently a short distance to some of the sighting locations.

In the "Baby Video," (taken outside of Modena, New York in May of 1997) which can be reviewed here, very prominent in the background was an apple orchard, as well as many years later after seeing the land, there were strawberry and blackberry bushes galore.

Also in the "Vermont Trail Cam Photo" (Captured in early September 2010), which also can be viewed here, was captured allegedly grabbing an apple from under an apple tree.

Do these controversial pieces of evidence, coincidentally support the sighting flaps of the last 4 decades?

Even more interesting is the research of Dr. Jane Goodall, (referencing her work in the Mogabe) whom used apples to coax the chimpanzees to socialize with her, noticed something interesting. The chimps often would go to the rotting apple first, Dr. Goodall assuming because they had an alcohol content. The chimps apparently enjoyed their buzz…
